Pacific OPera Victoria: La Boheme

Young love, Paris, and Puccini … resistance is futile.

One of the most loved operas of all time, Puccini’s La bohème is a gorgeous, nostalgic slice of life about a group of young friends hanging out together, experiencing Paris and love, and loss. Puccini’s music sparkles with humour, pours out lush, sumptuous melodies, and is always completely irresistible.

Madama Butterfly

A young geisha renounces her family to marry an American man. When he leaves to go back to his own country, she waits with their child for his return. Though she is the gentlest of heroines, Butterfly has formidable inner strength. Guided by honour and fidelity, sustained by hope, she refuses for the longest time to believe she has been abandoned. Puccini himself loved Butterfly above all his heroines – her for whom I wrote music in the night. And what music! The score pours out lush melodies, infused with delicate Japanese harmonies – it is as ravishing as anything in opera!

Lucia Di Lammermoor

In the brooding Scottish lowlands, it is men who call the shots. Clan rivalries, political maneuvering, and ancient vendettas leave no place for a woman who falls in love with the wrong man. Lucia is caught in the brutal web of her brother’s manipulation, her lover’s jealous rage, and the implacable enmity between their two clans. When she is bullied into an arranged marriage, her fragile spirit is shattered. In the most celebrated mad scene in all of opera, Donizetti’s entrancing melodic lines entwine round Lucia’s unraveling coloratura. This is the archetype of romantic bel canto opera … tempestuous passions, murder, madness, and doom, spun out in glorious song.
